What Influences Your Beliefs?

Ever consider who or what shapes your beliefs? Curious about anyone else’s? People hold strong opinions on a wide variety of topics from art and faith to health and politics.. People who share the same belief on one issue may or may not share the same belief on another. Yet, there exists a human tendency to label the folks who think differently on an issue as right or wrong, or good or bad without learning the basis for someone else’s belief and without questioning one’s own beliefs.

This may be a good time to pause and reflect on how one comes to believe what one believes. Do beliefs ever change? As people learn more and develop a greater understanding about a person or situation, beliefs may change or evolve. For nearly forty years, I never went to a chiropractor. Various comments and opinions of other people filled my mind about chiropractic care. Now, I wonder how I ever functioned without one.

While considering what shapes our own beliefs, it may also help to get curious about what shapes those of someone else, particularly someone with whom you disagree.People encounter a lifetime of people, places, and experiences that inform who they are and how they think. Ask questions. You may increase your understanding and learn something along the way.
